WTA: Begu thrills home crowd with Bucharest crown

Hometown favorite Irina-Camelia Begu captured her fourth career WTA title – and first on clay – at the BRD Bucharest Open, dispatching an in-form Julia Goerges in straight sets. BUCHAREST, Romania – Irina-Camelia Begu ended the BRD Bucharest Open with a bang, capturing her home title with 6-3, 7-5 win over Julia Goerges. The Romanian took control from the start of the match, and navigated through a tricky second set to seal the victory in one hour and 37 minutes on court. Begu has long been a dangerous player on clay, reaching the quarterfinals of last year’s Mutua Madrid Open and following that up with runs to the semis at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the second week of Roland Garros. Mutua Madrid: Copil, Halep, Cirstea, Begu

What a day at MMOpen… for Romanian tennis. First, Miss Halep twists and turns, plays around and by the end manages to win against Roberta Vinci 6-3; 2-6; 7-6(2).  Up next Miss Cirstea played just under one hour against Cathrine Bellis and won 6-3; 6-2.  Miss Begu got us all nervous in her match against Johanna Larsson. She lost first set but then got back in the game and won second and third set. Final score: 4-6; 7-6(5); 6-3. Last but not least and probably the most expected match of the day, Mr. Marius Copil  facing world number one, Mr. Andy Murray. The best player in the world at the moment had some difficulty during the match and congratulated Marius at the end. The match was great, the score was also good: 6-4; 6-3. Also, have to mention that Copil’s first serve was an Ace. Loved it!!!  Well played to all! Keep up the good work! We’re so proud!  Photo credit: Andrei Mlendea Facebook profile
